Why This Wall Needed Some TLC
The client’s garden in Wickersley was looking, well, a bit tired. A block boundary wall—thrown up years ago to level the plot—had never been finished. Raw aggregate blocks were leaching lime, soaking rainwater and discolouring the patio below. They asked We Fix Yorkshire to smarten things up and stop moisture sneaking into the adjoining flower beds.
Step-by-Step: Our Rendering Process
- Inspection & Prep – We checked blocks for movement and repointed a few shaky joints. A slurry coat of SBR & cement keyed the surface.
- Beads & Level Rails – External angle beads and drip beads (seen in the “before” photo) guaranteed sharp corners and a clean drip line above the gravel board.
- Base Coat – We applied a 10 mm scratch coat, scoring horizontal lines for the top layer to grip.
- Monocouche Render – Once cured, we sprayed a through-coloured monocouche render (off-white; keeps its colour for decades). It was ruled flat, sponged and finally scraped at 24 hours to expose a fine texture.
- Site Clean-up – All waste into Hippo bags, tarps removed, patio jet-washed. Job done.
Benefits of a Proper Render
- Weatherproof – Blocks no longer soak up driving rain, protecting the footing and garden path.
- Insulation Boost – A rendered skin adds a whisker of extra thermal mass; handy for outbuildings that back onto the wall.
- Low Maintenance – Monocouche is through-colour; no yearly painting marathon.
- Curb Appeal – The wall now matches the modern fence and fresh turf—value added come resale time.
DIY Corner – Can You Render a Small Wall Yourself?
Short answer: yes, if you’re handy and the wall is single-skin, waist height and on firm footings. Here’s a cut-down checklist:
- Key the surface with SBR slurry.
- Fix angle beads with external-grade adhesive.
- Apply 8–10 mm scratch coat; always keep beads visible.
- Let it cure 24–48 h (cover if frost is forecast).
- Add top coat; rule, sponge or scrape to finish.
When to call us: walls over 1.8 m, retaining walls holding soil, or if you need scaffolding. Rendering is heavy graft and monocouche bags aren’t cheap—get it wrong and you’re re-buying materials.
Project Costs & Timing
This 7 m x 1.8 m wall took two days plus a half-day return scrape, materials included, at just under £1,100. A lick of quality render beats repainting blockwork every other summer, so pay-back is fast.
FAQs
Q: Does monocouche render crack?
A: Minor hairlines are normal but structural cracking means movement. We add fibreglass mesh on suspect walls to reduce the risk.
Q: Can I paint over monocouche later?
A: You can, but pick a breathable masonry paint and wait at least six months so any lime content carbonates fully.
Q: How long will the finish last?
A: 15–20 years before a refresh wash. It’s through-colour, so even pressure-washing won’t strip pigment.
